Modern Masters 2015 Sealed Tournament
If you don’t open a Tarmogoyf, you’re gonna have a bad time.
This past FNM, I took part in a Modern Masters 2015 Sealed Tournament. When I left Magic, we didn’t have the Modern format. So I was a bit confused to see that cards printed after I left Magic were considered old cards and that they’re being played in a format that used to be Legacy. Weird. Still, I was excited to try a new format and apparently there’s this thing called a Tarma-whatever that everyone wants to get. Since I’m such a sucker to group-think, I bought myself a box and took part in the Sealed Tournament because hey, you can never get too many opportunities to open a Goyf, right? As if that wasn’t enough, I decided to buy some packs before the
tournament to see what goodies I could find (I decided to hold off on opening the box). And damn, I was pretty happy I did. My friend and I were just gonna open one pack each and see if we can best the other. He got a Spellskite, and I got an Etched Champion.
It wasn’t all bad though. I wanted the E.C. for an Affinity deck and it was fun to crack that pack. Egged on by my friend, I opened up another pack and BAM! Foiled Karn Liberated. I figured I just made some money (theoretical, kinda like internet money) so hey, why not open some more? All in all, it was a decent haul made all the better by opening…a freaking Goyf Champion! Not bad. Not bad at all. (See above for the best cards of the 12 packs I opened.)
However, my luck didn’t last and I had the shittiest 6 packs for Sealed ever! Didn’t get a single bomb and the best card I got was a Primeval Titan. It could be a badass card in the right deck, but with the support I had, it was better for me to play BW with a green splash just for the Titan. It was not pretty. AT. ALL. I made the first match competitive but I still lost 1-2. Eventually, I lost 3 matches and was so bummed I didn’t even want to play the last round. You know, it’s like what my old ski instructor used to say: “If you don’t open a Goyf, you’re gonna have a bad time.”
Something like that.
Overall, it was a fun time. FNM at my LGS has been getting bigger and it’s nice to see everyone on Friday. It somewhat reminds me of that time long ago when I used to play Magic on a Friday night and then end up at Del Taco playing some more after the tournament was over.
This Friday, there’s gonna be an MM2 Draft Tourny instead of Sealed. Only 2 boxes left because the packs sold like hot cakes. After finally opening my box (no Goyf), I would say it’s not worth it to crack packs. Still, I’ll probably draft because it’s a couple hours of fun with some friends. If a Goyf or Mox Opal somehow made an appearance, I’m not gonna complain.
